First-Time Telegram Desktop Setup
Telegram Desktop is the official Windows, macOS, and Linux client. This page walks through a cautious first install using only telegram.org.
1. Use the Official Installer
Open desktop.telegram.org in a browser. Choose the package that matches your operating system. Avoid third-party “Telegram plus” installers, rewritten APKs, or email attachments that claim to be Telegram Desktop.
2. Sign In With a Phone You Control
Desktop login asks for the same phone number already used on the mobile app, or it asks you to confirm a code on a signed-in device. Keep the phone nearby. Telegram will not email you a desktop installer as part of this flow.
3. Review Active Sessions
After login, open Settings → Devices (wording may vary slightly by version) and confirm that only computers you recognize are listed. Remove unknown sessions immediately.
4. Keep Updates Automatic
Leave in-app updates enabled. Official clients receive security patches through that channel. If a website asks you to disable updates or install a sidecar .exe, close the tab.
